Caramel Apple Tutorial

Making chocolate caramel apples is much easier than you think. Many other sites will tell you that you need lots of special equipment and even more setup and prep time. Caramel apples don't have to be tough to make, and I can show you how. See our supplies list to find great places to purchase the things you will need to make apples in your own kitchen

What You Need

  • Green Granny Smith Apples
  • Wooden Candy Apple Sticks
  • Caramel (5 pounds for 20 apples)
  • Chocolate A'peels (2 pounds for 20 apples)
  • Candy or Nut Toppings
  • Parchment Paper (wax paper melts and sticks)
  • Microwave
  • Large Microwaveable Containers

Getting Started

  1. Wash and towel dry your granny smith apples. Pull out the stems and be sure to remove any of the stickers.

  2. Push the wooden sticks about halfway through the apple starting at the top where the stem was removed.

  3. Place the caramel in the microwaveable containers and heat in the microwave. Heat in high for 2 or 3 minute intervals, stirring with a spatula between heating, until the caramel stirs easily and pours smoothly.

  4. Holding the apples by the stick, dip each apple in the caramel, twisting the apple and using the spatula to cover the entire apple. You can also use the spatula to scrape off excess caramel. You may need to heat the caramel an additional 30-60 seconds after dipping 4-6 apples.

  5. Place each apple on the parchment paper to set, allowing the caramel 15-20 minutes to cool to room temperature.

  6. While the apples cool, you can chop your nuts and candy toppings.

  7. Heat the chocolate in the microwave for 1 minute intervals, stirring with a spatula between heating, until the chocolate is smooth and free of any lumps.

  8. Dip the caramel apples in the chocolate while using the spatula the cover the entire apple. Use the spatula to remove any excess.

  9. For the toppings, you can either roll the apple in the toppings, or sprinkle the toppings on the apple by hand. Sprinkling takes more time, but is easier to get a consistently covered apple.

  10. FInally, let the apple cool again on the paper and enjoy!
