How to Make Red Candy Apples

apple_trayRed candy apples are a classic treat that reminds me of carnical rides and warm summer nights. The recipe is easy, the process is quick, and the apples are delicious. What more could you need? Check our supplies list for details on what to get.

What you'll Need

  • 12 large red apples (traditionally Red Delicious, but I prefer a sweeter Gala)
  • 12 Wooden candy apple sticks
  • Parchment paper (wax paper melts and sticks)
  • Candy thermometer
  • 4 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • Red food coloring
  • Flavor extract (cinnamon, cherry, or strawberry are popular)

Getting Started

  1. Wash and towel dry the apples, removing the stems and stickers.

  2. Push the wooden sticks in about half way, inserting where the stem was removed.

  3. In a saucepan, combine the sugar and water, stirring slowly. Add in the corn syrup.

  4. Heat mixture on medium high heat, stirring continuously until all the sugar is dissolved. Mix in the food coloring and extract to taste.

  5. Heat the mixture to 290 degrees. Do not stir after the sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and let sit for 2-3 minutes.

  6. Dip each apple in the candy and place on the parchment paper to cool, then enjoy!
